Do you enjoy the freedom of exploring a dive site without having to follow a guide or remain with a group of divers? And how many times have you been left alone throughout a dive by your buddy? The PADI Self Reliant Diver Specialty Course has been developed to focus on the needs for divers to be more self sufficient for those occasions when a buddy may not be around or when a solo dive has to be made. Be aware that this is not a course to be taken lightly.
The prerequisites to enter the PADI Self Reliant Diver Specialty Course are to have reached the age of 18 years, to be a certified PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, to have a minimum of 100 logged dives and to have successfully completed a dive skills assessment by a PADI Self Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor.
The duration of this course is two days.
You will learn how to calculate the rate at which you breathe through your gas. With this knowledge you will be able to calculate how long you can spend underwater at any given depth, returning with ample air reserve. You will develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a buddy.
You will recognize the value and application of the buddy system and sharpen your skills of diving self reliance, making you a better dive partner. Potential risks of diving alone and how to manage those risks will be pointed out.
You will discuss the equipment needed for a self reliant diver, the value of equipment redundancy and the back-up gear that is either critical for survival or critical to perform your dive with success.
Fine tuning your navigation skills will help you to avoid confusion and errors. You will take responsibility for yourself, instead of blindly following your instructor.
After the knowledge development section, you will make 3 dives in open water to practice all the skills you learned.
The purpose of the PADI Self Reliant Diver Specialty Course is not to encourage you to dive solo but simply to prepare you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to handle all aspects of the dive with no help.
